Gay chicken!
DNF at 38%. I don't hate this (there was a pretty fantastic scene between the two MCs a bit ago that I loved), but I also can just tell there are going to be too many side characters I don't care about, and everyone is going to be impressed and charmed by the MC (except for all those nasty close-minded old-fashioned vampyrs, who will doubtless be put in their place).

Wish it was longer and there was more introspection, but it was a lot of fun (and genuinely very creepy at times.... The hair scene was like something straight out of a horror story). I'll definitely be checking out the rest of the series.

Man. I could not love these books more.
I was worried the third book in a trilogy, in which the characters are already in an established relationship, would be boring - but Subtle Blood has a strong, interesting plot, and once things got moving (which was quite early on) I wasn't bored for a second. I just love these two so much, how they work together and complement each other. It's wonderful to see their relationship devel …Read More

Arik is on my top 5 list of lovable little shits
If you're reading a book with this title and cover, you know exactly what you're in for. Probably nothing about this book will especially surprise or disappoint you.
It's fine! The FMC is unremarkable and reasonable. The MMC reminds me of an alien version of Dimitri from Fire Emblem, which is a big plus. The worldbuilding was surprisingly interesting; the aliens really want to bite, which is hot, and they get fang-boners whe …Read More

Genuinely loved this. I was really surprised how touching and poignant this ended up being.
The narrator is an interesting character, and his narration felt almost stream of consciousness at times. The book starts out explicit and kinky and ends up being a moving story about found family, with the end result being that the first ~50% has a lot of sex scenes and the last ~50% almost none. I'm not sure if that's a complaint or …Read More

Deeply romantic. Great character development, lovely descriptions of the natural world. KJ Charles never misses.

While reading it, I felt it was repetitive and slow, and I almost DNF'ed. However, after finishing it, I admired what it was trying to do and found myself going back to reread/skim portions.
There is a twist in the last 5% that changes how the reader views the entire story. I appreciated what the author did with perspective and point of view - the entire narration is skewed by the MC's biases and assumptions, and so the sin …Read More

Did not like it.
It takes tropes I usually love and completely ruins them. The characters act and say things without any realistic basis or motivations, changing their minds abruptly just to serve the plot. Everything felt so forced.
Right from the beginning, there was a whirlwind introduction of all the characters at the bar, setting up the "companion book" vibe with hints about future couples. This kind of thing always dis …Read More
