"The answer to your specific salvation is always within your reach. You’ll know it by the way it sparkles." - Oh Wow Disco Witches of Fire Island by Blair Fell is unapologetically gay and I am here for it. 1989, we are taken to the gay haven that is Fire Island. Here we view Joe and his friend Ronnie experience probably the most transformative summer of their lives.
At its core. Joe and Ronnie was supposed to go to Fire Island to hustle and make their dreams come through (Well Ronnie's dream, Joe is just looking for an escape) However, the island gives what they need, not what they want. Throughout the summer, a number of characters are introduced, Howie and Lenny, acting as father figures to Joe as well a number of vividly fleshed out cast. Many of which on the LGBT spectrum. Friendships and enemies are formed, romance sparks all while "dark forces lurk in the background." Don't let the "Witches" in the title fool you though, this isn't a fantastical prose front and center; instead it serves to be a catalyst for plot and character development. Though the last chapter was magical, which could be attributed to the drugs.
Though this is a gay story on Fire Island, its not all partying and sex I had expected to read (This was actually very light with the smut). Instead we see Joe's insecurities and hang-ups surface all while various elements come into play against Joe. Through it all, a deluge of feelings; heartbreak, sadness, loss, loneliness, fears, courage, joy are rendered. Probably more I just can't name.
These characters of Disco Witches of Fire Island are an experience, a vividness almost parallel to reality. And this can very well be the case as this work was inspired by Fell's past of that time period.
Warning: HIV/AIDS is also a major plot point and may be a trigger.
As Milica had said in her review, "If you need me in the next few business days - don't, BECAUSE I'LL STILL BE CRYING OVER THIS BOOK!!!" Sentiments I wholly agree with. Blair Fell's Disco Witches of Fire Island has awoken dormant emotions in me, unfortunately I'll have to peg every other book I've read down a star or two. In other words; 5 stars rounded up to 10.
