As Meat Loves Salt

Review by Charlemagne

As Meat Loves Salt

I put off reading this for so long because I knew I needed to prepare myself.
My god did I enjoy it. Jacob is not a good man but honestly, almost everyone but Zeb, Izzy and Caro were debatably not good people. Theres so much selfishness and pain they all inflict on one another due to their own desires and goals.
The continuation of what is most likely schizophrenia in Jacob but experiencing it in a time when there's not any understanding on mental illness was so fascinating to read and it made me think about how religion especially in these early times (and even now) contribute so harshly to debilitating delusions and paranoia.
I know a lot of people are dissatisfied with the end but I liked it. Theres no closure, no repentance for Jacob, no peace for anyone or justice. No one gets a happy ending here.

I also read an interpretation from someone about those last few days at the settlement that it's not Caro and that Ferris did not take up with her but it is instead Jacob's paranoia and delusions reaching a new level of controlling his views of the world and I really liked that interpretation.
This books gave so much to think about and was a set in an era I haven't read any historical fiction for before and I would love to read more set in the 1600's now . Please read this but prepare yourself because nothing good happens.
